How to Finish the Edges of a Baby Quilt
There are several ways to finish the edges of a quilt, from binding to folding the backing over the edges to making decorative trims and edgings. One of the simplest ways, especially for a beginning quilter, is to use a quick turn technique to finish the edges of a quilt. This process works well with the smaller size of a baby quilt, especially if you use the same fabric for the border on the quilt top and the quilt backing.
Things You'll Need
- Quilt batting
- Quilt backing fabric
- Quilt top
- Straight pins
- Sewing machine
- Thread
- Scissors or rotary cutting tool
- Hand sewing needle

1
Lay out the pieces of your quilt on a large table or other work surface. In order: position the quilt batting first, then align the quilt backing -- face up -- on top of the batting and then put the quilt top -- face down -- centered onto the backing. The quilt top should be slightly smaller than the other two pieces.

Use straight pins to secure the three layers of the quilt together. Place several pins around the edges of the quilt top and also across the middle of the quilt.

3
Set your sewing machine to a straight stitch and position it approximately one-third of the way in on one long side of the quilt. Sew a straight seam around the edges of the quilt, ending on the opposite one-third of that same side so you have the middle third of that side unsewn.

4
Trim the edges of the quilt so that the batting and backing line up with the quilt top itself.
-
5
Remove the pins and turn the quilt right side out through the hole you left in one side. Push out the corners with your hands and flatten out the quilt.
-
6
Fold under the raw edges at the opening and stitch the opening closed by hand.
