Instructions for Stippling

Stippling is a painting effect used on walls that is created by tapping wet glaze with a brush to remove some of the glaze. These areas will allow the base color of the wall to show through the glaze, creating a multidimensional look. Stippling can be done with one color of glaze over a base coat of paint or with multiple colors of glaze. When using more than one color of glaze, let the previous coat dry completely before applying the next color. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Cover the floor and any furniture you have not removed from the room with plastic or cloth drop cloths to protect them from paint splatters.

    • 2

Apply two coats of paint with a paint roller and paintbrush to the walls you want to stipple. This paint should be mid sheen such as satin or semi-gloss and in the color you want your walls to be. Allow to dry completely.

    • 3

Apply stippling glaze with a paint roller to a small area that is not more than 3 feet across. This will allow you to create the effect before the glaze dries too much and becomes tacky.

    • 4

Dip the tips of the stippling brush bristles in a small amount of the glaze and tap the glaze quickly and firmly. Keep the brush at a 90 degree angle to the wall and do not move the brush across the wall while it is touching the glaze. Stop stippling 6 inches from the leading edge of the glaze. Wipe the bristles of the brush occasionally to remove excess glaze.

    • 5

Apply glaze to another section of the wall and repeat the stippling. Allow one wall to dry completely before stippling an adjoining wall.
