Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a steam cleaner to treat your bedding and upholstery for bedbugs. The steam only needs to penetrate less than an inch into any material it is used on. You can also hire a professional to steam clean your home for bedbug extermination. This approach is safe for people and pets.

    • 2

Spread boric acid in places where you've seen bed bugs feeding and hiding. Don't use boric acid on bed sheets or materials you'll have physical contact with; only use it in places where the bed bugs will come in contact with the acid and ingest it.

    • 3

Use any of several different herbs to combat bed bugs. Try lavender in spray form, or thyme, tea tree or eucalyptus in liquid form on bed linens, upholstery or soft surfaces in your home, including clothes. These herbs are not harmful if they come in contact with your skin.

    • 4

Wipe out bedbugs temporarily with botanical insecticides; they contain natural pyrethrins that repel bedbugs, but only for a short period of time. Pyrethrins are produced by certain species of the chrysanthemum plant. The poison penetrates the nervous system of the bedbug and incapacitates it, but the effect doesn't last long, and may need to be repeated several times.

    • 5

Put your linens in the dryer on high for at least 20 minutes to kill any bedbugs that might be on them. You can also hang your sheets and pillowcases in the sun on a very hot day; the heat of the sun will kill the bedbugs.

Tips & Warnings

  • Inspect the folds and creases of your sheets, mattresses and box springs for dark brown or reddish spots that bedbugs leave behind.

  • Bedbugs' favorite time to feed is the hour just before dawn, before they scatter to their hiding places in bed frames, mattresses and box springs.
