Learn how to properly address an envelope.

Addressing envelopes properly avoids confusion, helps ensure your mail gets delivered on time and makes a good impression. Although it's not difficult to address envelopes correctly, many people aren't aware of some etiquette issues, such as when to use titles, whether to type or handwrite envelopes or how to address widows and divorcées. Whether you're sending a cover letter to a business or addressing wedding invitations to distant relatives, avoid social blunders by following etiquette guidelines.

Instructions

    • 1

Neatly write or type your full return address, including your full name, street address, city, state and zip code, in the top left corner of the envelope. Do not use label stickers; these look unprofessional.

    • 2

Begin the recipient's address in the center of the envelope. Type or write the recipient's title and full name on the first line, even for informal correspondence. Abbreviate Dr., Mr., Mrs. and Ms., but spell out Miss, Master, Professor and other titles.

    • 3

Write the recipient's street address underneath her name, aligned to the left.

    • 4

Write the recipient's city, state and zip code on the next line. Use standard state abbreviations. Add the country only if you are sending mail to another country.

Tips & Warnings

  • Address married couples as Mr. and Mrs. Last Name.

  • Address a widow by the name she used while her husband was alive.

  • Address divorced women by their maiden name only if they have switched to it.

  • Address unmarried couples living together on separate lines without "and."

  • If you handwrite your envelopes, make sure your writing is neat and legible. If you make mistakes, start over with a fresh envelope.

  • Don't write out numbers. Use numerals instead.
