How to Put You Social Security Number in an X Format
A Social Security number is the most common numerical way to identify a person in the United States. Using the full number is often necessary, such as when applying for a job or bank account. Other times, it is not prudent to reveal the full number. In these situations, it is wise to reveal only some of the digits and conceal the rest with X's. Using this format, you can reveal a certain amount of identifying information and at the same time protect your complete information.

1
Decide how many, if any, numbers of your Social Security Number you wish to reveal in the X format. The most common format reveals only the last 4 digits.
-
2
Write the X's and dashes. For example, if you are leaving the last four numbers visible, write three X's, a dash, two X's, and then another dash. Write it like this "XXX-XX-."

3
Write the numerical digits. For example, if you are using the "last 4 digits" format, and the last 4 digits in your Social Security number are "1234," write the digits after the X's and dashes you have already written. This will look like "XXX-XX-1234."
