How to Test Baking Powder to See If it Is Good
Baking powder's leavening effect makes it a common ingredient in baked goods. It has an indefinite shelf life if it is unopened. Measure 1/2 cup hot water. Do not use water that is boiling.

Add 1 tsp. of baking powder to the water.

Watch the baking powder and water solution for fizz and rapid bubbles. The mixture should react very quickly. If it does not or if the baking powder sinks to the bottom of the cup, replace it.
