How to Create a Boutonniere
Boutonnieres are created with a single flower or small bunch of flowers that are bound together and fastened on to the left lapel of a man's suit. Creating a boutonniere for the man in your life is a simple project. The boutonniere can be worn to prom, a wedding or gala. Make a fresh boutonniere no more than a day or two before it will be worn to ensure freshness. Does this Spark an idea?

- Flower
- Floral wire
- Leaf or fern
- Floral tape
- Flower sealant
- Freezer bag
- Straight pin

Decide what flower will look best with the man's outfit and will flow with the theme of the event. Flowers like roses, carnations or calla lilies look nice for formal events, while gerbera daisies, hibiscus, tulips and miniature sunflowers look nice for semi-formal or casual events.

Prepare the flower. Remove all the leaves from the stem with sharp scissors. Cut the stem of the flower to 6 inches long. Prepare roses by cutting the stem to 1 inch long. Pierce the bud a few centimeters above the stem with a 12-inch piece of floral wire. Push the floral wire through one side of the bud through to the other side so you have equal amounts of wire on each side. Turn the rose one turn and repeat with another piece of floral wire so the wires from a cross-like shape. Pull the wires downward under the bud to create a stem. Wrap the wire together with floral tape. Tug on the floral tape as you wrap the stems downward from under the rose.

Cut a leaf or fern so the stem is about 6 inches long. Lay the flower on top of the leaf. Wrap the stems together with floral tape. Tug on the floral tape so it sticks to its self as you wrap the stems downward from under the flower. Wrap the stems together completely.

Cut the length of the stems with sharp scissors so they are 1 or 2 inches below the flower. Spray the boutonniere with flower sealant if it is not being used right away. Place the boutonniere into a freezer bag and set in the refrigerator near the doors. Mist the flower with flower sealant every one to two hours to keep it fresh.

Pin the boutonniere on to the man's left lapel with a straight pin.

Tips & Warnings
Glue ribbon around the stems of the flowers with flower glue.
Use only a single flower for the boutonniere if desired.
