How to Learn Computers for Fifth Grade
By the fifth grade, students should have a solid grasp of how to use computers for word processing and research applications. They should also develop the ability to type rapidly, since middle school and all forms of higher education demand this skill in order to complete work efficiently. Fortunately, there are tangible ways in which you can help students improve their typing and research abilities.

Teaching Research Skills
-
1
Give students a list of questions to research on the Internet. These could range from cutting-edge topics in science, such as nanoparticles, to terms in history. Choose questions that you think are appropriate for your students' ability levels and interests.
-
2
Point students towards appropriate search engines for them to use, and turn on a filter that will protect them from obscene websites.
-
-
3
Collect, at the end of the period, students' answers to questions. Since this is their first introduction to Internet research training, give them constructive criticism on how they could use the Internet even better to learn about topics.
Teaching Typing Skills
-
4
Give students a typing skills program to play with, which will reward high typing speeds.
-
5
Encourage students' parents to purchase the program as well, so that students can practice their typing at home.
-
6
Hold typing speed contests in class, in which you read a passage out loud and students transcribe it on their computers. Reward the student who transcribes most rapidly, with the highest degree of accuracy.
