How to Unzip a File in cPanel

It's easy to unzip files in cPanel.

Saving files in a compressed folder format, such as .zip, .gz, or .tar.gz, creates a smaller file for uploading to a hosting server. After the compressed folder uploads, by using FTP or the cPanel upload utility, you have to unzip its contents. This requires using cPanel's extraction utility in the "File Manager." The location on the server for extracting compressed files does not matter, and moving or copying extracted files after unzipping them is possible.

Instructions

1. Log in to your cPanel account and click "File Manager" under the "Files" section. Click the "Go" button in the "File Manager Directory Selection" window that pops up. The "File Manager" window displays.

2. Click the "Upload" link along the menu bar at the top and click the "Choose File" button in the "Upload Files" window that appears. Find the compressed folder on your computer's hard drive, select it and click the "Open" button. The folder uploads to your hosting server.

3. Go back to the "File Manager" window and click the "Refresh" or "Reload" button in your browser. The "File Manager" window reloads and the compressed folder now appears among your other files in the main window to the right.

4. Highlight the compressed folder by clicking on it and then click the "Extract" link located at the top right of the menu bar. The "Extract" window pops up. Click the "Extract File(s)" button and the compressed folder unzips the files to the same location as the compressed folder.

Tips & Warnings

• Move or copy the unzipped files to another location on your server by clicking the "Copy" or "Move Files" buttons located at the top left of the menu bar and selecting a new location.

• Unzipping files compressed in the ".rar" file format is not possible with cPanel.
