How to Draw a Rosette

How to Draw a Rosette thumbnail
Rosettes are geometric designs inspired by natural floral forms.

Rosettes are circular patterns commonly used in textile or architectural designs. They are similar to the floral design of a rose or the structural geometric design of a snowflake. Though they look complicated, six-point rosettes take a few simple tools to design, are easily converted to 12-point designs and can be shaded for a three-dimensional look.

Instructions

  1. Six-Point Rosette

    • 1

With your T-square, draw two perpendicular lines more than 4 inches in length, intersecting at the center, to form the cross that will be the base of your rosette.

    • 2

Measure and mark the radius of your rosette on the horizontal line, 2 inches from the center of your cross.

    • 3

Place the anchor of your compass at the center of your cross and the pencil-edge at the radius mark and turn your compass to draw a complete circle. The cross will divide your rosette into quarters.

    • 4

Keeping the distance the same as the radius from pencil-edge to anchor, place the anchor of your compass on the outer edge of the circle, where the horizontal line of the cross meets the outline of the circle.

    • 5

Draw an arc from edge to edge inside the outline of your circle.

    • 6

Continue to make arcs inside the circle, by anchoring your compass where the last arc ended and drawing a new arc from that anchored point. A total of six arcs will compose a rosette. Each arc should pass through the center of the cross.

    Twelve-Point Rosette

    • 7

If you want to make your six-point rosette into a 12-point rosette, continue making arcs on the inside of your circle, by anchoring your compass where the vertical line of the cross meets the top edge of your rosette.

    • 8

As you did for the six-point rosette, make a new arc by anchoring your compass where the last arc ended. Do this around the rosette, until a total of six new arcs are drawn. There should be 12 arcs total, forming a 12-petaled rosette.

Shade the negative space around the outside of your rosette, to bring your rosette's flower form to the foreground.
