How to Do Homemade Etching
Etching solution is readily available in craft stores and can be used to add decorative details to glassware. A set of wine or martini glasses, etched with a monogram, could make a thoughtful homemade holiday or wedding gift. A lively polka dot or swirl could also be etched on glassware, goblets or glass plates and plain glass canisters could be etched with content labels. Careful design planning is needed for neat and professional looking etched appearance.
Things You'll Need
- Dish soap
- Glassware
- Vinyl with a stick-on paper backing
- Wooden cutting board
- Craft knife
- Scissors
- Etching solution
- Fine artist paintbrush

Clean the glassware with soap and water and dry thoroughly.

Draw the design to be etched on the vinyl with a pencil.

Place the vinyl on a wooden cutting board and cut out the design with the craft knife.

Cut around the design, leaving a 1-inch margin, with the scissors.

Peel off the vinyl paper backing and press the design to the glassware.

Dip the paintbrush in the etching solution and paint it over the open space design on the vinyl.

Leave the etching solution on the glassware for the manufacturer's recommended time. Rinse the etching solution off the glassware with clear water thoroughly.
