How to Install Child-Proof Gates

New parents and parents of toddlers know that a growing child soon can go from one place to another in an instant. They also can get into dangerous hazardous chemicals such as household cleaners, pesticides and auto maintenance supplies. Install a child-proof gate to keep children out of certain areas and little hands off such dangerous materials. These gates usually can be installed in a matter minutes. Does this Spark an idea?

      Measure the room's entrance that will be gated with a tape measure. Generally, child-proof gates are expandable but only extend to a certain width. You must know how large the opening is buy the right child-proof gate.

      Child-proof gates are sold in various colors and made in materials ranging from bamboo to plastic to steel. Consider buying child-proof locks in addition to the gate if the gate does not come with a pre-installed lock.

      Unpackage the gate and any hardware contained with it. Some gates come with corner pads to blunt sharp corners or edges, while others come with plastic gate stands.

      Place the gate in the opening to be blocked. Collapse it to a size smaller than the entrance. Lift the gate above the floor and slide its stand underneath if a stand is included. Snap the gate into the stand's groove. Expand the gate to meet the sides of the entrance or door jambs.

      Twist the retaining bolts by hand on the top and bottom of the gate. There usually are four retaining bolts with plastic hand-fasteners attached to the gate. Secure the bottom first by twisting the two retaining bolts simultaneously until clamped into place. This will help center the gate. Fasten the top two retaining bolts.

      Install child-proof locks, if necessary, by following the manufacturer's instructions. This will keep a child from opening the gate if you are out of the room. Test the gate and locks to see that they are properly secured.
