Potty training is one of the most difficult challenges for a toddler and her parents. Learn some simple potty training readiness signs, tips and tricks to feel more confident about the process. Once you've figured out your child is ready to begin potty training, it's time to go for it. Positive reinforcement gives her the motivation to keep going. A sticker chart is one way to reward her efforts, and a reusable chart can be encourage her again and again until she is successfully trained.

Things You'll Need

  • 3 sheets of coordinating scrapbook paper (8-inch by 8-inch or larger)
  • Roll of contact paper
  • Stickers
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Permanent marker

Instructions

    • 1

      Cut squares of 6 inches by 8 inches, 5 inches by 7 inches and 1 inch by 6 inches out of the scrapbook paper.

      Glue the 5-inch by 7-inch square inside the 6-inch by 8-inch square and the 1-inch by 6-inch at the top center of the inside one.

      Using a ruler and pencil, draw a chart inside the squares you glued together. Draw it 3 inches high and 6 inches wide. Divide it into six 1-inch columns. Draw a line 1 1/2 inches down lengthwise to divide the chart into 2 rows. Trace over the pencil lines with a permanent marker.

      Write "Potty Chart" at the top of the chart inside the 1-inch by 6-inch square. Write "pee" in the first column, top row and "poop" in the first column, bottom row. First write the words in pencil, then trace over with the permanent marker.

      Lay the potty chart on top of the contact paper. Cut around the outside of the chart twice, leaving at least 1 inch around the chart.

      Peel off the backing paper and carefully apply the contact paper to both sides of the chart.

      Trim around the edges with scissors, leaving about 1/8 inch around the edge.

      Put the potty chart in a place your child can reach and have her add stickers when she uses the potty.

      Once the chart is full, remove the stickers and start again.
