How to Make Cake Boards

How to Make Cake Boards thumbnail
A cake board is a more decorative way to display a cake.

Cake boards refer to a decorated tray, usually made of cardboard and covered by decorative paper or foil. While cake boards aren't an absolute necessity, as you can always transport and display cakes on baking trays or pans, they are a more festive and fancier way to display your cakes. This can be particularly striking if you have a cake in the shape in the star, for example, you can make a matching, star-shaped cake board. Cake boards are particularly necessary if you plan on displaying your cakes in tiers, stacked on top of each other. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Place the cake pan you plan to bake your cake in on top of a large sheet of cardboard approximately 1/4 inch thick. Trace the outline of the cake board onto to the cardboard.

    • 2

Draw a 1 inch border around your tracing. Cut out the cardboard around the 1-inch border you just drew.

    • 3

Lay a flat piece of wrapping paper or foil in front of you with the wrong side face up. Place your trimmed and shaped piece of cardboard on top of it. Trace an outline of your cardboard on the foil. Draw a 1-inch to 1 1/2-inch border around your traced board. Cut out the wrapping paper or foil, following along this border.

    • 4

Turn your piece of wrapping paper or foil wrong-side up and lay your cake board flat on top of it. Center your board in the middle of the foil or wrapping paper. Apply a thin layer of glue around the perimeter of your board.

    • 5

Pull the wrapping paper or foil over the underside of the board, yanking it taut over the glue. Tape the edges in place with making tape. Turn it over. It's now ready for use.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can add a border of lace or cording to the circumference of the cake board when finished using a hot glue gun. You can use rolled fondant instead of paper, but your cake board won't be reusable.
