How to Update Java on Macs

Many websites and computer applications need the Java computing platform in order to run properly. All versions of the Mac OS X operating system include Java. Running the most recent version of Java on your Mac ensures that Java applications will run smoothly and securely. When Java issues a new release of the platform, it becomes available through the Mac "Software Update" feature, through which you can download and install the most recent update to Java for free.

Instructions

1. Open the Apple menu in the upper-left corner of the screen and select "Software Update." A status window opens as the Software Update utility checks for new software.

2. Click "Show Details" if Software Update finds updates for your Mac.

3. Review the available updates in the window. If an update to Java is available, you will see it listed. Select the Java update and any additional updates you want to install.

4. Click the "Install" button. A status window opens as the updates download and install.
