How to File a 1040EZ Without a W2

Taxpayers are required to file yearly taxes regardless if they receive W-2 forms from employers. If you don't receive a W-2, you must try to get the original or a copy of the W-2 from your employer. If the employer doesn't cooperate, you have other options for obtaining the form; however, it is still possible to file form 1040EZ without a W-2.

      Contact the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) at 800-829-1040 after February 14, only after you have contacted your employer and asked for your W-2 or a copy of the W-2 with no results. The IRS will ask you for the employer's name, address and your dates of employment. The agent will ask you to estimate your wages and deductions. Use your last paycheck stub for the tax year in question for more accurate amounts. If you don't have the last paycheck stub, before you call the IRS, estimate your wages and deductions the best you can and give that amount to the agent.

      Wait until the first week of April to file your tax return. This gives the employer time to send you a W-2 form if the employer is going to comply. If you don't receive this form, you will need to fill out form 4852, Substitute for W-2.

      Complete form 4852 using your last paycheck stub or the amounts you gave to the IRS when you contacted the IRS office about not receiving your W-2 form. It is important that you use the information as it appears on the paycheck stub or the same information and figures you gave to the IRS in your phone conversation.

      Complete the form 1040EZ using the information you entered on form 4852. After the 1040EZ is completed, sign and date the form. Send the 1040EZ, form 4852 and any other documents you have completed for entries made on the 1040EZ form to the IRS at the website listed for your specific state.

      Complete your state return. Send a copy of form 4852 and any documents pertaining to completing the state tax form to the state taxing authority.

  • If you receive your W-2 after you have filed your tax returns, and the information you entered on form 4852 is incorrect, you need to file form 1040X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return with the correct information. Send that form and any supporting documents to the IRS. You may need to file an amended return for your state tax return as well.

  • Always keep your paycheck stubs at least until you receive your W-2 forms each year so you have the pay information if you don't receive a W-2 from the employers for some reason or to check for inaccuracies.
