How to Get Rid of Twitter Non Followers

On Twitter, the reasons are numerous why someone you are following may decide to stop following you back. Under normal circumstances, you may not notice this has happened until you try to send a direct message and discover that you cannot. If you are following less than a few hundred people, you can use the Twitter website to find out who is not following you back. If you are following thousands of people, this method can be time consuming. Fortunately websites Tweeter Karma and FriendorFollow automate this process for you.

Instructions

  1. Using Twitter's Website

    • 1

Open a Web browser and log into the Twitter website with your account username and password.

    • 2

Click on the "Following" link. This is located on the left of your Twitter homepage. On your Twitter profile page, it is directly under your profile picture.

    • 3

Wait for Twitter to display the accounts you are following. The most recent are at the top, and the first people you followed at the bottom.

    • 4

Scroll down the page. You will see a "Message" button beside the names of people who are following you, allowing you to send them a direct message. Anyone without that button is not following you.

    • 5

Put your mouse on the green "Following" button on any accounts not following you back. The button will change to red and will say "Unfollow." Click on the button to unfollow that account. You will no longer see them in your Twitter stream.

    Using Twitter Tracking Services

    • 6

Open a Web browser and navigate to a Twitter following tracker such as FriendorFollow or Tweeter Karma. Some services, including Tweeter Karma, require that you log in using your Twitter account to access the service. Others, including FriendorFollow, only require you to enter your Twitter account name.

    • 7

Wait for the service to identify everyone you follow. This may take up to several minutes if you are following a lot of people. The service will display three types of accounts in separate pages. These are often called "following" -- those who you follow, but do not follow you back; "fans" -- those who follow you, but you do not follow back; and "friends" -- those you follow who follow back.

    • 8

Click on each account you are following that is not following you back. This will open their profile page in Twitter in a new browser tab or window.

    • 9

Confirm that the account is not following you back, by a lack of a "Message" button on the top of the profile. Hover your mouse over the green "Following" button. The button will change to read and will say "Unfollow." Click on it. That account will no longer be visible in your Twitter feed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Twitter discourages "mass unfollows". While there are no set limits, if you unfollow too many people in one day, or unfollow many accounts only a few days after you started following them, Twitter may suspend your account, or remove your visibility from the public feed.

  • Twitter may suspend your account if you use any service claiming to get followers fast, or automates following or unfollowing of accounts. Read the Twitter Automation Rules and Best Practices page before considering any automated service.
