How to Link Photos in Adobe InDesign

Save

Working with photos in Adobe InDesign can often be confusing, especially if you are accustomed to adding photos to word-processing documents, such as Microsoft Word. To conserve memory resources, InDesign links to photo files rather than embedding the images into documents. To update photos that are changed after they are placed in InDesign, you simply have to update the links. However, if you ever move or rename a photo, it will have to be relinked or replaced so that InDesign can read the file. You can limit the chance of losing photos by packaging a document.

Place Photos

  • Click "File" from the main menu and select "Place."

  • Browse to the photo file that you want to link and click "Open."

  • Click inside a frame to link the photo to it or click in the document to add a frame the size of the linked photo.

Update Links

  • Click "Window" from the main menu and select "Links" to open the link panel.

  • Click the photo that needs to be updated. If the photo has been edited, a yellow triangle will signify that it needs to be updated.

  • Click the "Update" button, which looks like a page with circulating arrows.

Relink Images

  • Click "Window" from the main menu and select "Links" to open the link panel.

  • Click the photo that you want to replace. If the original photo is missing, a red circle will signify that it needs to be relinked.

  • Click the "Relink" button, which looks like a broken chain.

  • Navigate to the correct location or a new file. Click "Open."

Package Document

  • Click "File" from the main menu and select "Package."

  • Click "Package."

  • Fill out the printing information if desired and click "Continue."

  • Name the packaged folder and select a location to save the package. Click "Save." A folder titled "Links" will be added to the packaged folder, which is where a copy of the linked photos will be saved.
