How to Transport a Hamster in the Cold

When transporting your hamster in the cold, take precautionary measures.

Hamsters are small rodents that make fun household pets as they require minimal care. Like any pet though, when transporting animals in less-than-ideal conditions, it is important to take extra precautions so they are protected from the elements. For hamsters, it is especially important to protect them from the cold as they will go into a hibernation state very quickly. Taking a few steps to protect your furry friend will ensure the transportation process is smooth without incident.

Instructions

1. Select a cardboard box large enough to fit the hamster's cage. Use a box with handles on the sides or one that is easy to carry. A box with a lid is ideal so long as the box has a few small breathing holes for your hamster.

2. Layer the bottom of the box with newspapers for added insulation. Leave enough room for the cage in the box while covering the holes and cracks in the box with the newspapers.

3. Place the hamster cage inside the box. Change your hamster's water and food beforehand if you are taking a long trip. Lift up the box to test the balance of the cage within the box and check the security of the cage making sure it doesn't slide. Cushion the sides of the cage with towels or blankets if necessary for extra security.

4. Place a light blanket or towel over the top of the cage. Cover the edges of the box with the blanket if you have a box without a lid.

5. Carry the box out to your vehicle for transport. Secure the box for the journey checking your pet periodically throughout the trip.

• For extended trips or air travel, purchase a plastic carrier from your local pet store.
