How to Draw a Poodle for a Poodle Skirt
Poodle skirts were a fad in the 1950s and early 1960s. These skirts were just below knee-length and puffed away drastically from the body. On the bottom left or right corner of the skirt, a poodle silhouette was sewed to the skirt. Purchase these poodle silhouettes from a craft store, or simply make your own design to use on felt or other sturdy appliqué fabrics that you can sew to the skirt or in any other place.

1
Draw an oval shape horizontally on a piece of paper. This will become the body of the dog.
-
2
Draw another oval about one inch away from the left edge of the oval connected to the bottom of the original oval. This will become the front legs. Draw another oval at the end of the right side of the original oval. Make this oval positioned at about a 45 degree angle from the original oval. This will become the back legs of the poodle.

3
Add a triangle to the top of the original oval. The triangle should take up about half of the top side of the oval. Add a small oval coming off from the top of the triangle to make the muzzle of the poodle.
-
4
Alter the lines of the drawing to make the design look more animal-like and less obvious shapes. Bring the bottom line of the body up slightly near the back of the body creating the ribcage and stomach for the dog. Replace the rounded top back of the body oval with a more angled line to create the rump of the dog. Add roundness to the triangle to make the outline of the head. Fill in the triangle shape with a ruffled edge to create the curly poodle hair. Divide the two leg ovals into four feet with curly cuffs near the feet.
-
5
Add a ruffled tail to the dog's rump. Make any additional changes necessary to help the poodle look realistic. Remove any pointed edges that would make it difficult to transfer the pattern to fabric. When you are satisfied with the design, transfer it to fabric and cut it out.
