By affecting these variables, it is possible to extend the shelf life of a loaf of bread up to three times as long as without these methods. The type of bread also affects how long it stays fresh.       Decide what type of bread needs to be stored: enriched bread like the type that comes sliced and used for sandwiches or hearty loaf bread with a thicker crust. Store soft, enriched bread only in plastic containers to avoid losing moisture. Store hearty bread only in paper wrappings or bread boxes to allow it to breathe.

      Freeze soft, enriched bread in a freezer as soon as possible if it is intended for consumption at a later time. Bread may be frozen for up to two weeks. Before eating, allow at least two hours for the bread to thaw in an open temperate area. Keep the bread inside the plastic container at all times.

      Store hearty bread in a freezer in the same fashion however, cover the loaf completely in the paper wrapping. Place the bread in the freezer the same day it is baked. Thaw hearty breads in the microwave before consuming.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not store bread in the refrigerator to avoid drying the bread out. Keep bread out of direct sunlight.
