How to Take Fur Off a Furby

A Furby is a robotic toy released by Hasbro in the late 1990s. Fubies are programmed to speak a fictional language. When people play with it, the Furby slowly begins to speak English. Many people who are interested in robotics "hack" the circuitry inside a Furby in order to change the toy's functions. Before doing that, however, the Furby's fur must be removed.

Instructions

    • 1

      Remove the batteries.

    • 2

Cut the stitches on the backside of the Furby, below the tail.

    • 3

Locate the plastic-cable tie beneath the threads. Cut this tie and pull it out. If you're thinking of reattaching the fur, carefully undo the tie so it can be reused.

    • 4

Look at the Furby's ears. Pull up the fabric covering them to reveal a thin plastic stick. Continue pulling the fabric up while turning it inside-out until you find the stitches that connect the fabric to the plastic stick. Cut those stitches and pull off the fabric.

    • 5

Pull the fur up from the bottom of the Furby, turning it inside-out as you go. Pull it until the fur is attached only at the face, where it is glued.

    • 6

Tug gently on the fur and pull it away the glued section. Cut away the glue with a utility knife if necessary.

Tips & Warnings

  • When the fur is removed, all that's left is the facial plate on top of the fur, which will be attached with a few stitches. If you want to reattach the fur later, the facial plate may be popped off of the Furby. If that isn't a concern, it may be easier to simply cut the stitches connecting the fur and the facial plate.

  • Be careful not to damage the plastic sticks inside the Furby's ears; doing so may damage the internal device.

  • Altering a Furby will void your warranty.

  • Replacing the fur after it's been removed will require some sewing skill. Don't remove the fur unless you're confident you can replace it.
