Making cards from scrap paper is a fun way to keep Christmas expenses down.

As if purchasing Christmas presents for your loved ones and decorating the house were not expensive enough, there are Christmas cards to send. Luckily, with a little bit of ingenuity, Christmas cards can be made for free. There are a few different methods for creating free cards -- some require Internet access and some will require postage. However, with each method, the creation of the cards is free. All you need is a bit of creativity to get the process started.

Collect all the scrap paper you can find lying around the house. Whether left over from school projects or dug out of the recycling bin, excess paper is everywhere if you just look for it. Cut appropriate designs into the paper, such as trees, stars or angels. Once you have collected enough pieces, glue them onto old envelopes. You can unfold an envelope that was once junk mail and make that the backing paper. Write your message on the inside, place into another envelope and mail the card.

Create an e-greeting. Plenty of websites offer access to free online greetings. Other sites, such as Blue Mountain, which has fairly expensive paper cards, allow online users a seven-day free trial. As long as you compose and email all of your cards within that time period, they are free. Other sites, such as eGreetings, are always free for online users.

Compose a friendly email. Emails allow you the same space and freedom of a letter but without the cost of postage. Also, you can enclose a photograph for free with an email. Simply take a family photograph with your digital camera, attach the photograph either to the letter or within the email and the greeting is finished. You can write out a document and attach it to the email, or you can write the entire Christmas greeting in the body of the email.

Send a photograph with a greeting from your phone. Most phones have camera capabilities, meaning you can take a photograph of someone holding a sign that says "Happy Holidays!" or whatever greeting you choose. Then send the photograph from your phone to all those you wish to send a holiday greeting.
