How to Change Footnote Size in LaTeX

Save

By default, a LaTeX user cannot alter the way footnotes are displayed in LaTeX, but with the help of a third-party (free) package named "footmisc," it becomes possible to alter not just the size but everything about how footnotes are displayed.

Things You'll Need

  • footmisc
  • Open your favorite text editor and paste the following to define a simple LaTeX document:

    \documentclass{article}

    \usepackage{footmisc}

    \begin{document}

    \end{document}

  • Paste the following text between the "begin" and "end" commands:

    This is some text that will have a footnote at the end of it. \footnote{kevin}

    \renewcommand\footnotelayout{\tiny}

    This is some more text that will have a new footnote at the end. \footnote{kevin2}

    \renewcommand\footnotelayout{\Large}

    This is yet more text with a third footnote. \footnote{kevin3}

    This defines three footnotes within some text: the first in normal font, the second in "tiny" font, and the last in "Large" font. The text within the footnote brackets is what will appear in the footnote. Replace the text within the footnote brackets with the text you would like to appear in the footnote. When the document is compiled by LaTeX, the "\footnote" commands will be replaced with the appropriate footnote number, and the text will appear at the bottom of the page or the end of the chapter, depending upon your configuration.

  • Save your document.
