How to Stop Being Rude to People

How to Stop Being Rude to People thumbnail
Stop being rude. Nobody likes it.

Politeness is a key interpersonal skill for making friends, getting dates and generally having a good, happy life. If you're rude to people they will not respond to you well, will not want to be around you, and will generally make your life harder. If, on the other hand, you are polite to people the converse will happen. To stop being so rude, you need t make a series of small, day-to-day changes. Over time, these changes will add up and overhaul your entire personality, reducing your rudeness and increasing your politeness.

Instructions

    • 1

Say "Thank you." You can never really do this enough. Whenever someone does something for you, no matter how small of a task it was and whether it was his job or not, tell him you appreciate his effort. This is a polite, small gesture that goes a long way, especially when used consistently.

    • 2

Phrase requests as requests. "Will you please get me some bread?" is far more polite than "Go get me some bread." Even if the request is reasonable, people will bristle when it is phrased as an order, so give them a choice and they will almost always comply with a smile.

    • 3

Ignore your cell phone when you are talking to people or dealing with them in any way. This shows that you have enough respect for them to give them your full attention.

    • 4

Turn your phone off in situations where it will be disruptive. This follows the same principle as above -- talking on your phone during a movie or other public situation shows a lack of respect for the people around you by making their experience less enjoyable.

    • 5

Be calm, even when people are frustrating you. If someone is upsetting you, tell them how and why in a restrained manner. Shouting and name-calling are both extremely rude, and you need to avoid doing them unless the situation absolutely warrants it.
