How to Fill Grout Lines With a Grout Bag

The usual way of grouting tile is to spread grout over the surface with the edge of a hard rubber grout float, pressing it into the lines between them, then wiping the excess grout off the face. However, if you've got unusually wide grout lines, or the tiles are of unfinished stone or other materials that will stain if you get grout on them, there's a more targeted approach you can take. Grout bags work in the same manner as pastry bags, allowing you to apply the grout directly into the lines without getting it anywhere else. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Pour an inch of water in the bucket. Pour the same amount of grout mix over it. Use your drywall knife to mix it well, stirring vigorously.

    • 2

Add additional grout mix and water, alternately. Adjust the amounts based on the recommended ratios specified on the packaging, and on your assessment of the thickness of the grout, which should be like thick mud. Make enough to fill your grout bag (usually about half a gallon).

    • 3

Let the grout to sit in the bucket for 10 minutes without disturbing it, then re-stir.

    • 4

Pour your mixed grout into the grout bag through the back end, scooping as needed with your putty knife. Close the back end.

    • 5

Set the tip of the grout bag into the first space between the tiles, at one end. Squeeze the bag with both your hands, forcing the grout out the tip and into the gap. Pull the bag slowly backward along the line, letting it fill the gap.

    • 6

Continue to the end of the line. Immediately smooth the line out with a dampened rag, getting it flat and wiping up any grout that's on the stone face.

    • 7

Repeat each space between the tiles. Let the grout set for 48 hours before washing or touching the wall.
