How to Spool a Line Trimmer
Each line trimmer uses a slightly different cutting mechanism and method of line restringing. However, most respooling is similar for many models, and the main difference lies in the location of parts. Every model of trimmer also uses a different diameter and length of cutting line. These measurements should never be exceeded as they risk damaging the cutting head. Locate your model's line specifications in the operator's manual before spooling new line onto the trimmer. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Turn off the ignition switch on the line trimmer. Unplug the electrical cord if it's an electrical model. Set the trimmer on a level work area outside. Grab hold of the moving part of the head with one hand.
-
2
Remove the spool cover with the other hand. Some models have two tabs that need to be depressed, others have a knob that needs to be unscrewed and some models need to be rotated while pushing down on them. Remove the cover and pull the spool out of the head. Wipe the area inside the head, the spool and the cover with the rag.

3
Cut off the appropriate amount of trimmer line. Attach the line to the spool. Some models have small holes in the spool's center; others have holes on top of the spool and some have a notch in the center of the spool. Some trimmers will also use two lines instead of one; however, the process will be the same for both lines.

4
Wind the line around the spool. Follow the arrow direction on the spool. Use tight even rows making sure the line doesn't overlap or crisscross itself. Push the remaining number of inches of line -- usually 5 or 6 inches -- into a holding notch on the top half of the spool.
-
5
Thread the line through the eyelet on the head and push the spool back into the head. Attach the spool cover to secure it in place.
