The Kindle comes set up and is easy to use.

The Kindle comes in several versions and two different colors. Amazon offers a less expensive version that uses Wi-Fi to connect to the Internet. The more expensive version offers 3G and Wi-Fi capability. In addition, Amazon offers the Kindle DX, which has a larger screen and provides global wireless coverage. One of the Kindle's most appealing features is its ability to let customers download and read books in less than a minute.

Instructions

    • 1

Charge the Kindle. Plug the small end of the USB cable into the Kindle port and the other end either into your computer or into an outlet using a power adapter. A charging icon in the upper-right corner of the screen will let you know that it is charging. The light will turn green on the charge indicator when charging is complete.

    • 2

Turn the power on by sliding the power switch at the bottom of the Kindle. When you first turn on the Kindle, the User Guide will appear.

    • 3

Connect to a network. Your Kindle either has both 3G and Wi-Fi capability or just Wi-Fi capability. If your Kindle comes with 3G, you will see an indicator in the upper-right corner of the screen, letting you know that you are connected to Whispernet, Amazon's proprietary network. You won't need to do anything more if this is the case. If your Kindle has Wi-Fi-only capability, you will need to connect to a private or public network. Press the "Home" button, then press "Menu." Press the five-way controller down to get to "Settings." Select it by pressing the center of the five-way controller. Select "Wi-Fi Settings" to see which networks are available. Select a public or private network. If this is your private network, you will need to enter a password.

Purchase and download a book from the Kindle store if you do not have any books yet. Press the "Menu" button, then select "Shop in the Kindle Store." Search for a book you are interested in buying, highlight it with the five-way controller and select "Buy." Your book will download and appear in your list.

    • 5

Press "Home" to view your list of books. A new book will have the "new" designation next to it. Press the five-way controller to select the book. It will open to the first page.

    • 6

Use the "Next Page" button on either side of the Kindle to turn to the next page. Use the "Previous Page" button to return to an earlier page.

    • 7

Adjust text size to suit your needs using the text key with "Aa" on the button; this button is located next to the space bar on the keyboard. Press the button to make the text appear larger or smaller.
