How to Make Things Out of Plastic Bottles


More than 60 million plastic bottles end up in our landfills and incinerators daily according to the Container Recycling Institute. Finding ways to reuse plastic bottles before you toss them will help reduce the waste that ends up in the landfills and water streams. Making new things out of your old plastic bottles also saves money. Before replacing an old household item, consider making that item out of the old plastic bottles found around your home.

Things You'll Need

  • Scissors
  • Plastic bottles in varying sizes

Flower Planters

  • Clean an old plastic 2 liter or gallon sized plastic bottle.

  • Cut the bottle in half, reserving the top half for another project or the recycling bin.

  • Use the bottom half of the plastic bottles and punch holes to encourage proper drainage.

  • Add soil and push the seed inside, water and watch the plant grow from your plastic bottle.

Household Cleaner Solution Bottle

  • Find an old, clean one or two liter plastic bottle.

  • Fill the clean bottle with your homemade household cleaner solution or a commercial cleaning solution.

  • Attach a spray head to replace the typical bottle cap.

  • Reuse or recycle the old bottle cap.

  • Use the bottle as you would any other bottle with a cleaning solution.
