How to Make a Pop-Up Book or Card
Encountering a pop-up element in a book or a card is a pleasant surprise for adults and kids alike because it's unexpected and out of the ordinary. Making your own pop-up book or card is easy and inexpensive, but it does require forethought and planning. Give a humorous pop-up card for a co-worker's birthday or construct a pop-up book that your kids can color and decorate.

1
Lay two sheets of same-size paper directly on top of one another and fold in half. If using standard 8 inch x 11.5 inch paper, fold horizontally to form a card shape. Remove one of the pieces of paper and lay it aside.
-
2
Make a dot with the pencil on the center of the folded edge.
-
-
3
Use the ruler to draw a one- to two-inch horizontal line from the dot toward the interior of the paper.
-
4
Cut along the line, starting at the folded edge. You will now have a top and bottom flap on either side of the cut line.
-
5
Fold the top flap up and the bottom flap down to form two right triangles. Fold the flaps in both directions so the crease can fold both ways.
-
6
Unfold the two flaps and the entire paper.
-
7
Fold the paper slightly in half again along the previously made center crease, but push the two triangle-shapes in the opposite direction. Flatten and score the creases with your fingernail.
-
8
Open the paper, and you will see a "mouth" popping out in the center. With markers, draw a person or animal around the mouth.
-
9
Position the other piece of paper from Step 1 like a background or cover around the paper with the mouth. Write a message or draw a picture inside the mouth on this sheet of paper.
-
10
Repeat Steps 1 through 9 several times to make a book. Lay all the folded sheets of paper on top of one another with folded ends together. Wrap another sheet of paper around the entire stack to act as a book cover. Staple or glue the folded edges to join all the pages together.
