Gila Window Film Instructions

Residential window film is a protective coating applied to windows for decorative purposes, to add tint or to filter out UV rays and reflect heat. The film is a composite substance made of metallized polyester mylar layers that bonds together. A typical thickness of residential window film is 2 mil, however some films range up to 8 mil. Instructions

    • 1

Clean the inside of the window with Gila Application Solution. Use a razor blade to remove stuck-on dirt or paint. Squeegee the window from top to bottom. Wipe the window gasket clean with a rag.

    • 2

Roll the film out on a clean flat surface. Measure your window and mark the dimensions on the film. Cut the film one inch larger than your window in both dimensions. Trim the excess off after application.

    • 3

Tape a piece of transparent to each side of one corner of the film. Pull the two pieces of tape to initiate separation of the film from the clear liner material.

    • 4

Spray application solution on the inside of window and on both sides of the film. It is helpful to have an assistant hold the cut section of film up while you spray it.

    • 5

Pull the two pieces of transparent tape further to fully separate all the clear liner from the film. Spray the adhesive side of the film with application solution as you separate the liner until the entire surface of the film is wet.

    • 6

Hold the film up to the window with the adhesive side facing the glass and apply to the glass. Use your fingers to smooth it and shift its position until the 1-inch of excess film is evenly overlapping the window frame on all sides.

    • 7

Spray the film lightly with application solution and squeegee down the centerline. Then, starting at the top on the right side, squeegee horizontally from the center out toward both sides, leaving a 2-inch un-squeegeed perimeter around the edges. Work your way to the bottom of the right side then repeat the process on the left side.

    • 8

Place the blade of the utility knife in the slit of the Gila edging tool. Square the tool against a top corner of the window and draw it firmly down the window to the bottom corner to trim the film. Pull away the trimmed strip of film. Repeat the process on all edges of the window.

    • 9

Re-wet the film and repeat the squeegee process, smoothing from the centerline out to the edges. Squeegee out any air bubbles trapped under the film. Repeat this process until the entire window has been squeegeed dry. Allow 7 to 10 days for the applied film to dry and cure in place.
