How to Connect Plastic Straws With Wire Clips

How to Connect Plastic Straws With Wire Clips thumbnail
Straws can be used for more than just drinking.

A number of crafts or educational projects can be built by connecting straws with wire clips. You can build a mobile, a tower, a bridge, or a straw chain. Use these items to teach concepts about the laws of engineering or just for the fun of creating something out of random materials. You can connect the straws together with the wire clips in more ways than one to achieve different results. Some methods work better for creating designs while others work best for structural support.

Instructions

  1. Straw Chain

    • 1

Push a wire clip into the end of a straw.

    • 2

Hook a wire clip to the wire clip pushed into the end of the straw.

    • 3

Push the wire clip, clipped to the clip in the end of the straw into the end of a second straw. Repeat this process to connect multiple straws together.

    Wire Clip Mobile

    • 4

Hold a wire clip and push a straw through one of its ends until the clip is at the center of the straw.

    • 5

Place a second and third wire clip over the ends of the straw. You should now have three wire clips over the straw. One in the middle and one at each end.

    • 6

Attach two or more wire clips to the two wire clips at the ends of the straw.

    • 7

Slide a second straw through the wire clips dangling from the first straw. Repeat this process to create a series of straws hung with wire clips from the straws above. Hang the creation using the first wire clip placed in the center of the first straw in the series.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also connect straws by clipping the ends of the straws together with the wire clips.

  • Wire clips present a choking hazard.
