How to Patch an Aluminum Boat With 3M 5200

When you have a small crack in your aluminum boat above or below the water line, you can use 3M's 5200 marine adhesive caulk as a temporary patch until you are able to effect permanent repairs. The caulk, applied with a caulking gun, comes in a cardboard tube with a closed plastic spout at one end. If your problem is no more than an open seam, marine adhesive caulk is the material of choice for the repair.

Instructions

    • 1

Trim the spout on the tube of 5200 with a sharp jack knife to create an opening 1/4-inch wide. The end of the spout should be cut at about a 45-degree angle. Place the tube in a caulking gun frame.

    • 2

Locate the area that needs repair. Place the end of the tube just past the end of the area requiring repair. Push the tube along the seam or crack, keeping the end of the tube against the metal. Squeeze the caulking gun trigger to dispense the adhesive caulk as you push the gun forward.

    • 3

Work the 5200 with a putty knife or spatula for as much as four hours after application, to ensure complete coverage of the repair. Allow the 5200 to dry for 24 to 36 hours to cure completely.
