How to Grow Astilbe Glut
Astilbe Glut (Astilbe x arendsii 'Glut'), more commonly known as false spirea, is a flowering perennial that thrives within zones 4 through 9 on the U.S. Department of Agriculture Hardiness Zone Map. Because the plant was bred in Germany, Glut is its German name. It may be labeled at your nursery as Glow, the English translation. One of the loveliest Astilbe hybrids, Glut blooms in deep red flowers on a 12- to 18-inch plant. Enjoy the flowers in the garden or cut them for fresh or dried arrangements. Even the dried seed heads are ornamental. Astilbe Glut has few care requirements. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Grow your Astilbe Glut in a shady spot in the garden. The soil should be well-drained so that the roots don't sit in water. This is especially important in the winter.
-
2
Maintain moist soil at all times. Even a short amount of time in dry soil will cause the Astilbe Glut to drop foliage.
-
-
3
Spread 3 inches of mulch around the Astilbe. Because mulch insulates the soil, it will help cut down on the amount of water you need to provide.
-
4
Fertilize in late spring just before flowering and again in July. Use a 6-2-4 fertilizer, at the rate suggested for the age and size of your Astilbe. Water as you normally do after fertilizing.
-
5
Cut old foliage, flowers and stems off in early spring. If you want to shape the plant, you can safely remove up to one-third of its growth.
