How to Roll Down a Window When It's on Child Lock

When power windows hit the market, the child lock followed soon after. Its purpose when engaged is to prevent the rear windows or doors from being operated by someone sitting in a back seat. During an emergency or for some other reason you need open the rear doors or windows, there are two simple steps to fixing this. On some vehicles there is a single control button for the window locks and door locks, while on a number of newer vehicles they are operated by two separate controls.

Things You'll Need

  • 4-door car with automatic windows

Disengaging the Child Lock

  • From the driver's seat, locate the toggle button for the child door lock.

  • Press the toggle button for the child lock to disengage it.

  • In the back seat, locate the toggle switch for the window or door.

  • From the back seat, press the toggle switch for the window or door.

  • From the back seat, open either the window or the door.

Overriding the Child Window Lock from the Front Seat
