How to Initialize Voicemail

Voicemail is an electronic system that lets callers record messages for people who either don't or can't answer their phones. It has largely replaced answering machines as the preferred method of receiving voice messages. Voicemail is intended to be simple as possible to use, but you do need to initialize it before it becomes active. Initializing voicemail requires you to set up a few basic preferences.

  • Call your voicemail using your cellphone. Some phones let you do this by dialing your own phone number, or you might have a specific voicemail button on the phone itself.

  • Set the password for your voicemail account. Some accounts require you to enter a default password to login (typically a set of zeroes), then you can follow the menu instructions to select a new numerical password for yourself.

  • Enter the new password again to verify it. This prevents you from making a mistake and not being able to access your account in the future as a result.

  • Record your name and a greeting that will play when someone calls. The automated menu will give you the option of listening to it and rerecording it if you're not pleased with the first attempt.

  • Disconnect from the system. Your voicemail should now be initialized.
