How to Add a Nickname in Google Contacts

Save

Remembering which email address in your contact list belongs to which of your friends can sometimes be difficult, especially if your friends use addresses like CatLover@example.com. To alleviate this, many email providers and programs let you assign nicknames to your contacts. The nicknames then appear in the contact information for your friends. Google offers this feature as well, but not in its "Google Contacts" interface -- edit contact listings in Gmail if you want to hand out nicknames.

  • Navigate to Gmail and log in to your account.

  • Click on the "Contacts" link in the left column.

  • Click on the name of the contact you'd like to assign a nickname to.

  • Click the "Add" button at the bottom of the main pane. A list of further options appears.

  • Click on "Nickname." An editable field appears underneath the contact's name at the top of the main pane.

  • Type in your nickname for the contact.

  • Click "Save Now" in the bottom right corner to keep the change.
