How to Port a Number to Google Voice

Save

Google Voice is a call-forwarding and voicemail service from Google. The service allows you to forward phone calls and text messages to every phone you own at no cost. As of 2011, Google Voice now enables you to port a number from a wireless phone provider, meaning you can use the Google Voice service while still keeping a number that your friends and family already have. Learn how to port a phone number to Google Voice in just a few steps.

  • Sign in to your Google Voice account (see Resources).

  • Click the gear icon located in the top left corner of the screen.

  • Select "Voice settings" from the menu that drops down.

  • Click the "Change / Port" link next to your current Google Voice phone number, then select "I want to use my existing mobile number instead."

  • Enter the mobile phone number you'd like to port and click the "Check" button.

  • Click the first check box, then click the next five check boxes that appear and select "Next: Phone Verification."

  • Select the "Call me now" button and, when prompted, enter the verification code shown on the screen. This verifies that you do own the phone number in question.

  • Enter your wireless account information on the next page, then click "Next" to view the transaction confirmation page.

  • Confirm the transaction and pay for your number to be ported using Google Checkout.
