Evaluating people in leadership positions provides them with feedback so that they are able to improve their leadership effectiveness. There are notable differences and similarities in how men and women in leadership manage and lead their organizations. When evaluating leadership strengths and weaknesses, you can use a checklist.
Evaluate how well the leader communicates with the team. Strengths in the communication styles of both female and male leaders can be evaluated on whether the communication is team-work oriented, encourages access to information and sets clear goals and responsibilities.
Identify the type of interaction the leader has with the employees by focusing on skills such as sensitivity and negotiation. Women will tend toward a more open and flexible interaction with their employees. Men are less relationship-oriented and may want instant high-quality results from their employees.
Measure the managerial competencies by observing whether the leader is transformational or transactional. Women leaders are more transformational leaders as they focus less on punishment and more on enhancing employee performance through coaching and mentoring. Male leaders are more transactional and focused more on rewards and punishment.
Evaluate the performance skills of the leader by focusing on how effectively she is executing tasks. Measure skills such as her ability to generate high-quality goals, recognize industry trends and come up with viable ideas. Female leaders encourage collaboration and inclusiveness while male leaders tend to have a stronger management style. These traits influence how effectively they execute tasks.
