How to Find a Baptist Preacher

How to Find a Baptist Preacher thumbnail
A Baptist preacher serves his church in many capacities.

Whether you're looking for a Baptist minister to baptize you, perform your wedding ceremony, officiate at a funeral or just searching for a church home, finding a Baptist minister is easy to do. The two largest groups of Baptists include the Southern Baptist Convention and the American Baptist Association. Many smaller groups of Baptist churches exist as well, including free will, landmark, primitive and others. There are several steps to help you locate the right Baptist preacher for you.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine which branch of the Baptist religion you are interested in. While Baptists as a whole typically believe in the baptism of believers rather than infants and the ability of each church to make its own decisions, they may differ on many other points.

    • 2

Locate the appropriate Baptist church in your area. Consult your local yellow pages listing for Baptist churches. The telephone directory breaks the Baptist denomination listings down even further by specific classifications, allowing you to find the exact type of Baptist church and minister you're seeking.

    • 3

Call the church of your choice and ask to speak to the preacher or make an appointment to meet with him. A personal meeting to discuss your needs for any religious ceremony or when choosing a church is always a good idea.

    • 4

Meet with the preacher in person. Discuss any concerns or questions you have regarding your ceremony or church attendance. Get a feel for how well you mesh with the minister and whether or not his style and personality suit your needs.

Tips & Warnings

  • Since Baptist preachers are not ordained or governed by any one organization as a whole, there is no central locating service to assist you in finding a specific minister by name.

  • Use the Southern Baptist Convention minister search tool online to track down a specific pastor of that denomination by name.
