Walmart MoneyCards work similarly to a debit card, because it enables you to spend or withdraw only as much money as you have in the account. MoneyCards also allow you to shop online and make bill payments without giving out your actual bank account number. MoneyCards are safer than cash, and secure if lost or stolen. Walmart offers several options to renew your MoneyCard, some at no charge and others with nominal reloading fee.
Step 1
Transfer funds electronically from your own online bank account to the GE Money Bank—the issuing bank for the Walmart MoneyCard. You'll need your own bank routing number as well as the account number of your established Walmart MoneyCard. As of April 2011, there are no reload fees associated with the MoneyCard, although Walmart may limit the number of loading transaction in a day. Transfers take 1 to 3 business days depending upon your bank's policies.

Step 2
Take your pre-printed payroll or government check to the MoneyCard customer service center, where they will apply the total to your Walmart Money Card. Although there are no reload fees, Walmart requires a minimum of $20 and a maximum of $1,500 to be applied to the card. As of April 2011, this service is not available in the states of New Jersey, New York or Rhode Island.
Step 3
Swipe your MoneyCard at the Walmart cash registers and pay cash to reload any amount between $20 and $1,100. A $3 reload fee applies to this service, as of April 2011.
Step 4
Set up a free direct deposit account, enabling you to load a portion or your complete paycheck directly to your Walmart MoneyCard on the same day as your pay date. Contact the MoneyCenter website and your Human Resources department at work for specific forms needed to enable direct deposits. As of April 2011, this service carries no reload fees.
Step 5
Deposit money into your account at the Walmart MoneyCenter Express kiosks, conveniently located near the Walmart MoneyCenters or Walmart customer service counters. The kiosk allows you to check your balance, add or withdraw funds. Transactions at the MoneyCenter Express kiosks carry a $3 reload fee, as of April 2011.
Tip
The MoneyCenter Express kiosks work similar to a traditional ATM, but also allow you to purchase phone cards and money orders at the same time.
Walmart also offers a Student Edition card, where parents can load money on one card and the student has access to another the card. Contact a MoneyCenter customer service agent for assistance setting up a Student Edition account.
Warning
If your Walmart MoneyCard carries an expiration date, it will expire. Walmart will either provide a replacement card, or reimburse any remaining funds in the account.
