How to Replace the RAM in an HP Pavilion Laptop
Replace the RAM in an HP Pavilion laptop computer with new RAM when there are known memory errors or when it is time to upgrade. Find out how much RAM the laptop will support and install the maximum amount available, or just replace faulty RAM with the exact same style and speed modules that are already in it. See how to test the RAM in an HP Pavilion to find out if that is what is causing the problems in an unstable system.
Instructions

1
Back up all important data on the HP Pavilion laptop prior to replacing the RAM or performing any other operations on the computer.
-
2
Click "Start" (Windows Orb), "Shut Down" to power down the computer. If the laptop is already off, power it on and shut down Windows this way to ensure it is not in sleep or hibernation mode.
-
-
3
Remove the AC power adapter cord from the wall or outlet strip and disconnect it from the laptop. Don the anti-static wrist strap according to the instructions that were supplied with it.
-
4
Close the lid and disconnect any USB devices or cables coming from the HP Pavilion laptop.
-
5
Flip the laptop onto its lid on a soft cloth or smooth surface to avoid scratching the lid.
-
6
Remove the two screws that hold the cover on the RAM compartment on the bottom of the laptop, as indicated by the universal symbol for RAM which resembles a small integrated circuit.
-
7
Release the small metal tabs that hold the RAM module in place by pressing them both outward gently until the RAM module springs upward slightly. Pull the module directly out along its axis and replace it with the new module at the same angle, as indicated by the small key notch in the module which lines up with the small key tab in the socket.
-
8
Swivel the RAM module down toward the small metal tabs that hold the RAM module in place, spreading the tabs slightly to allow the module to snap into place. Press inward gently on the metal tabs to ensure they are seated fully onto the RAM module. Replace the compartment cover.

Tips & Warnings
Replace the existing RAM with the largest capacity module available for best results. Make sure the RAM modules are the same speed and, if possible, the same brand and capacity when using more than one module in an HP Pavilion laptop to prevent conflicts.
Remove both RAM modules first and then replace the RAM modules if replacing two modules.
Many internal components of a laptop, including the RAM, are static-sensitive and care should be taken to use an anti-static wrist strap as directed whenever handling RAM or working inside a laptop.
