How to Flag a Post in Craigslist

Save

Craigslist is an online site used mostly for selling or trading goods and services. The site also contains classified ads and forums. The site's terms of use regarding content that may be posted and goods or services that may be advertised is specific, and you can flag listings that violate the terms if you find something in a post that is inappropriate. You can also flag posts or listings that you find funny for inclusion in the Best of Craigslist forum.

  • Familiarize yourself with Craigslist's terms of use, which are posted on the website. Number 7 in the terms describes the content that is allowed and disallowed on Craigslist. Number 19 requests that users report violations of the terms by "flagging" the postings for review or by emailing abuse@craigslist.org.

  • Read the reasons for flagging on the online community site. You can find them by clicking "Help, FAQ, Abuse, Legal" on Craigslist's home page and then clicking "What Are 'Flags' and 'Flagging'?"

  • Review a post or listing you think may violate Craigslist's terms. Consider flagging if the content is miscategorized---in the wrong category, referring to another ad posted on Craigslist or misplaced in any other way. Another reason for flagging is for content prohibited by the terms. A third flagging trigger is spam or over-posted content, which is a single item listed in multiple categories or cities. Finally, flag a post if you think it should be included in Best of Craigslist.

  • Locate the white box on the upper right-hand side of a listing. If you are sure you wish to flag, choose one of the four reasons for flagging and click that link. Hovering over a link with your mouse opens a small pop-up that reminds you what each link means. For example, hovering over Prohibited opens the statement "Violates Craigslist Terms of Use or Other Posted Guidelines."

Tips & Warnings

  • Listings are removed after a specific number of flags have been sent. Craigslist does not publish the number of flags required, but it varies by city and category.
  • If your listing is the one that was flagged, Craigslist will send you an email telling you so, but will not explain why. To find out what might have gone wrong, visit the Flag Help forum.
  • Do not flag a listing more than once.
