How to Get Your Business Found Locally

How to Get Your Business Found Locally thumbnail
Building your online presence takes work and search engine optimization.

In today's economy having an edge over other businesses is key to your success. One way to have an advantage over other companies is to have an online presence that will get your business found locally. However, just a having a website does not guarantee your business will be found. Your business must be optimized for the city that you live in by having a website with targeted keywords and listings on the first pages of the major search engines.

Instructions

    • 1

Open a Google Places, Yahoo Local or Bing Local account and list your business. Include your address, hours of operation, email and phone number. Add photos, coupons, daily specials and upcoming events once your account is verified with the services.

    • 2

Optimize your business website by adding targeted, local keywords to your website. For example, if you have a business in Denver, Colorado, such as a ski shop, use words like "Denver Ski Shop" or "Skiing Denver." Add a meta tag or title tag to your website. This adds a description of your website to the top of the web browser when opening your website. For example, a meta tag description for a ski shop in Denver might be "Local Denver Skiing Supplies." Search engines use meta tags to figure out what your page is about. A meta tag should be entered in the HTML code of the website, between the <head> tags.

Register with local directories that allow you to list information about your business. The Chamber of Commerce or your Internet Yellow pages are example of this type of directory. Partner with similar businesses and exchange links to help advertise your business.

    • 4

Set up a social media account on a website such as Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn. Use the biography section to describe your business. Your business will then show up in local searches. Post status messages that advertise your business and take time to interact with other local companies by posting on their social media sites and responding to messages.
