How to Hang Large Windchimes

How to Hang Large Windchimes thumbnail
Especially heavy wind chimes require heavy-duty support.

Hanging large wind chimes is a simple project that can be completed in minutes, using common home-repair tools. Because hanging wind chimes are meant to be suspended, they typically include a ring at the top for easy installation. Especially heavy chimes should be installed with appropriate hardware, securely attached to a strong structure such as an overhead beam, ceiling joist or sturdy branch. The hardware must be strong enough to support the chimes and prevent them from falling, even on windy days. Does this Spark an idea?

  • Lag hook, 1/4-inch diameter shank, 2 to 3 inches long
  • Drill with drilling bit, 3/16-inch diameter

Instructions

  1. Installation on an Overhead Beam or Joist

    • 1

Measure and note the overall length and width of the wind chimes. Select a strong wooden structure to hang the chimes on. The space beneath the structure must be large enough to allow the chimes to hang and swing at least 30 degrees in any direction without impediment. Mark the beam or joist where you plan to hang the chimes. Using a drill and driving bit, drill a vertical hole in the overhead support, approximately 1 inch deep.

    • 2

Insert the threaded shank of the lag hook into the pilot hole and turn clockwise to tighten until the curved portion of the hook reaches the wood. If it becomes too difficult to turn the hook by hand, use pliers to grasp the hook for added torque.

    • 3

Hang the chime's suspension ring onto the hook.

    Installation on a Tree Limb

    • 4

Measure the diameter of the tree limb where you plan to install the wind chime. Use a bolt cutter to cut a length of chain, 2 inches longer than the diameter of the branch.

    • 5

Drape the chain over the branch where you plan to install the chime. Open the chain connector or carabiner clip. Join the ends of the chain with the connector or clip to form a loop around the branch. If necessary, tighten the chain loop by moving the connector.

    • 6

Hang the chime's suspension ring onto the open connector or carabiner clip. Close the connector of the clip.

Tips & Warnings

  • Most home-improvement stores can cut any chain bought there without charge.
