How to View PNG Images by Default in Ubuntu

Save

Ubuntu is a feature-rich Linux-based operating system. When Ubuntu is installed, several useful productivity applications are installed as well. The Shotwell Image Viewer, installed by default, opens JPGs and other photo files. However, no application is installed by default to handle PNG files. The GIMP Image Editor is a popular open-source application with functionality similar to Adobe Photoshop that may be easily installed using the Ubuntu Software Center. Once GIMP is installed, GIMP becomes the default application to handle PNG files.

  • Click the "Applications" link on the top taskbar of the Ubuntu desktop.

  • Click the "Ubuntu Software Center" link to open the "Software Center" interface.

  • Click the "Graphics" icon.

  • Click the "Painting and Editing" option.

  • Click the "GIMP Image Editor" entry.

  • Click "Install." The Ubuntu Software Center will install the application.

  • Click the PNG file to open the file in GIMP.
