How to Make Gum Paste With Fondant

The properties of fondant and gum paste are very similar. Fondant is softer than gum paste; it will not harden past the consistency of soft clay. Gum paste allows for stronger creations that will harden when dry. Gum paste is soft and pliable; it can be rolled into thin pieces before it dries. Gum paste is generally used for detailed, smaller creations and can be made at home. Homemade or purchased fondant can be altered to act as a gum paste. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Knead 1 lb. of fondant until it is workable (the consistency of soft clay). Add confectioners' sugar if it feels too sticky.

    • 2

Roll the fondant out flat on a surface that is lightly dusted with confectioners' sugar. The confectioners' sugar will prevent the dough from sticking to the surface.

    • 3

Knead 1 cup of gum paste mix into the 1 lb. of already rolled fondant. The fondant will take on the characteristics of gum paste, drying harder than it would alone.
