How to Make Cute Outfits Out of Old Clothes

How to Make Cute Outfits Out of Old Clothes thumbnail
Rips and tears can be made into a design feature.

Bring out your hidden fashion designer and convert old clothes into cute new outfits using scraps, leftovers and craft paints. Do not worry if the garment you are revamping has rips, tears or stains. Use your imagination to incorporate those into your designs. Lots of rips would work well for a "punk-style" design. Stick fabric scraps over small holes or stains, or use them as the base for a feature such as drawing flower leaves around a small hole. If a garment is too damaged to use whole, cut it up and use the scraps to decorate something else. The more scraps and items you collect, the more creative fun you'll have.

  • Dressmaker's chalk

Instructions

    • 1

Wash your garment, leave to dry and, if necessary, iron. Lay out on a flat surface with the area you wish to decorate face up.

    • 2

Sketch a pattern for your design on the garment using dressmaker's chalk. Cut out fabric shapes and pin them in place to see if they fit the design. Trim or move if necessary.

    • 3

Glue fabric patches in place with PVA adhesive. Use fabric paint to enhance the design.

    • 4

Glue on scraps of ribbon, lace, beads, buttons or sequins. (see ref 1) Leave to dry.

Tips & Warnings

  • To make matching tops and bottoms for an outfit, your original garments do not have to match. You can "reverse match" them by making the same design on each of them but using different colors --- such as using scraps of blue material to create a flower pattern on a red t-shirt, then creating the same flower pattern out of red fabric scraps on blue jeans.
