Fences add a decorative and protective barrier around your home. In order to keep a fence looking nice and functioning as it should, you will need perform routine maintenance and repairs. Broken and rotted fence pickets must be repaired to keep the fence in good condition. Damaged pickets can be pried off and replaced by homeowners. Other repairs might include securing loose boards that have lifted up from posts due to expansion and contraction of the wood. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Hammer
  • Flat bar
  • Replacement pickets
  • Box, finish nails
  • Wood finish
  • Paintbrush

Instructions

    • 1

      Inspect the pickets along your fence. These are the vertical boards that provide the barrier on the fence between posts. They are fastened to cross support boards to create fence panels. Hammer any nails back into place on loose pickets.

      Slide a flat bar under any damaged or rotted pickets along the fence and gently pry them up. Lift the damaged pickets off the cross support boards.

      Align the replacement pickets along the fence at each place where you removed a damaged ones. Hammer finish nails through the pickets into the upper and lower cross supports. Use two to four evenly spaced nails per cross support.

      Apply a matching wood finish to the replacement pickets with a paintbrush.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep your fence painted in order to prevent them from weather damage.

  • Wear eye protection when making fence repairs.
