How to Remove the Mesh Curtain From a Fireplace

The mesh curtain in front of your fireplace helps to keep your home safe by trapping any large embers that may escape from flames. The curtain is held in place by a rod secured over the front of the fireplace. Over time, these curtains can become encrusted with soot and give your house a permanent smoke smell. Removing the mesh curtain from a fireplace will allow you to give the safety screen a thorough cleaning.

Things You'll Need

  • Plastic sheet/drop cloth
  • Stiff-bristle brush
  • Screwdriver (if necessary)
  • Place a piece of plastic or drop cloth around the mantel in front of your fireplace. This will help keep soot from staining your mantel or flooring.

  • Close the mesh curtain if necessary. Use a stiff-bristle brush to remove any large pieces of soot or embers.

  • Check for clips or screws holding the rod for the mesh curtain in place. Remove these with the appropriate tool if present.

  • Grab the rod supporting the mesh curtain firmly by each end.

  • Lift the road and mesh curtain straight up, raising the rod until it clears the mounting brackets and pulling it toward you. Slowly (so as to not displace soot) set the curtain and rod down on the plastic sheet or drop cloth.

  • Unscrew any ends on the rod securing the mesh curtain in place. Slide the mesh curtain off the rod.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wear work gloves or disposable gloves if you want to keep your hands clean during this procedure.
  • The above steps are just a guideline. Consult the use and care guide for your fireplace, if possible, as removing your mesh curtain may differ.
